Lately, I’ve been noticing that I’ve been having a harder time than usual talking about the Hunt... the annual scavenger hunt that I run, formerly known as GISHWHES, now known as GISH. I tend to do these, like little playful, things letting people know about it, whimsical, full of jauntiness. And I’m finding that with the current state of the world, with so much scary, hateful divisive rhetoric circulating, that it’s hard to talk about a game that I put on and feel like, um, - feel like it should be- what I should be talking about.
But then, it occurred to me: this thing that we do? This GISH? Is a force for good in the world, frankly. We have... We have literally rescued from the most dire circumstances you can imagine, several Syrian refugee families. People who are, you know, stuck on a cot in a tent for years on end with no medical attention. Kids who are 12 years old who are gonna kill themselves so there will be enough- enough money for food for the other kids in the family.
That same girl has now said that she is going to medical school. And that’s because of us. Because of gishwhes and we... we provided a home for a veteran who lost his legs. We collected the largest number of charitable pledges EVER according to the Guinness Book of World Records.. We’ve had people donate bone marrow because of this to save kids with cancer. We have gotten thousands of people to register to vote through this game! So what we’re doing IS important. AND it’s fun. It’s bringing a little light and a little joy into our lives this summer. But it’s also spreading good and doing good in a way that I think is important.
So, when I realized that, I realized I could start talking about it and getting excited about it again- not that I wasn’t excited about it, but I was just... I’ve been... I’ve been getting kind of angry about the state of the world lately, and I feel like this is something that we can DO to make the world a little better.
So, join the HUNT! Join up with this army of good that we can be. And... have some fun in the process. Because... fighting to make the world a better place and to create art and to help people pay attention to the things that are important in life, and to one another... That process can also be a joyful one.
